A Guide to Underground Fault Locating

This webinar provides a description of installations of new medium voltage underground power cables have been steadily increasing for decades and show no signs of slowing. Despite this, the amount of aged underground cables in distribution networks is still quite significant. Unlike overhead lines which may operate on self-healing circuits where faults can be cleared by autoreclosers, underground cable faults almost always involve physical damage to the cables and downtime. In this webinar, we will cover the basic principles of cable fault location, focusing on prelocation methods such as Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR), bridges, and the Arc Reflection Method (ARM). We will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each technique and address further steps in the fault locating process like burning, thumping and pinpointing. Since each fault is unique, cable fault location is more of a troubleshooting process than simply running through all available tests. It is important to learn about the applicability and limitations of various approaches and how to use them to systematically identify the next cable fault in your network.
